The app is free during the Open Beta, and what you download is yours to keep. The AI is paid for separately, to the provider you pick, at their prices. Most providers charge by the amount of text sent and written, some models cost nothing, and a model on your own computer costs only the electricity.
To see what a turn used, turn on Show token count above the message box in the app's Interface settings.
Any of these work: Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, OpenRouter, NanoGPT, or any other service that speaks the OpenAI or Anthropic format. OpenRouter and NanoGPT put many models behind one key, which makes it easy to try a few.
To run a model on your own machine, the app connects to Ollama, KoboldCpp and LM Studio. On a PC with a Claude Pro or Max plan, it can also use Claude Code.
It is a native app, with memory that builds itself as you play, a narrator and campaigns, and characters who text you first on Android. SillyTavern gives you finer control of the prompt, text completion, extensions and scripting, and it is free and open source. The full comparison goes through it part by part. No. The memory features run on Google's Gemini embedding model, and you can reach it through OpenRouter, NanoGPT or another service that offers it, not only with a key from Google. Without an embedding model chat still works, but characters recall far less of your story.
The app adds no filter of its own. What a model will write is decided by the provider and model you choose, and by their terms. It is worth knowing that while our app does support official API endpoints (Google AI Studio, Anthropic API, etc), the same models served from API proxies like OpenRouter and NanoGPT possess significantly less restrictive guardrails.
Your characters, chats and memories are stored on your own device, and syncing between your devices runs over your own network. None of it passes through a server of ours. The conversation itself goes to the AI provider you chose, under your own key.
Characters you publish to the Character Kitchen are the exception: those are public, and stored by us so others can download them.
Yes. One device hosts and the others connect to it over your own network; on the same Wi-Fi, Windows and Android find each other by themselves. Characters, chats, memories and settings sync. API keys and the look of the app stay on each device.
Every download button on this site always gives you the latest version. Install it over the one you have.
During the Open Beta, ask for a key on Discord and you get one: a lifetime update key, free, yours to keep after the beta ends. With a key the app updates itself on Windows, Android and Linux.
What we ask in return is that you stay reachable. A beta runs on questions and answers: we ask how it is going, you tell us what broke. Take a key and deliberately cut the line, and we may take that key back.
Once the app is finished, a license is what gets you the installer and the updates, through Patreon or a storefront. Ending a subscription doesn't switch anything off: the version you have is yours and keeps working, it simply stops receiving new ones.
The app becomes a paid product: from then on a license is what gets you the installer and the updates that follow it.
Nothing is taken away from anyone who was here first. Every version you downloaded during the beta stays yours and keeps working, and the lifetime update keys handed out during the beta keep working too.
Use Check your download in the download section: choose the file, on your phone or your computer, and your browser compares its SHA-256 checksum with ours. Each download card also shows its checksum, and the patch notes list the checksums of every release from 1.23.0 on.
On Android, check the APK before you install it:

On a computer you can also work out the checksum yourself and compare it with ours:

The app's menus are in English. Characters can write in any language your model understands. Beware: LLMs are auto-completion machines. The breadth of System instructions written in English will naturally compel the model to respond using English. If an instruction to write in another language is ignored, you might need to rewrite System instructions using the desired language.
